Description
1942 "The Pride of the Yankees" Cast Signed Baseball with Babe Ruth, Gary Cooper. Widely considered the most important sports film of all time, the Lou Gehrig biopic featured a tantalizing convergence of stars from the diamond and silver screen joined to honor the fallen Iron Horse. This ONL (Frick) sphere is one of the few known to have been birthed upon the set of that film, and the first we've encountered mounted on a "Compliments of Christy Walsh/Pride of the Yankees" blotter, indicating that the ball was a gift from the pioneer sports agent whose star clients included Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The former appears on the ball's side panel, while the widow of the latter adorns the sweet spot with a bold yet hearbreaking brief inscription and autograph in 10/10 ink. Joining the Babe (8/10) on the southern panel are former Yankees teammate Bill Dickey and Academy Award nominee Gary Cooper, each rating 6/10 on the sphere's lightly toned hide. Completing the roster of signers are director Sam Wood, producer Sam Goldwyn, actor Walter Brennan and ballplayer Babe Herman, each rating 8/10 or better. The ball originally belonged to Kate McVeigh (McAllister), who worked with Walsh in the promotion of the film, and is consigned by her family. A magnificent keepsake from one of the most beloved sports films of all time, absolutely drenched in sports and silver screen history. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
