1936 Arky Vaughan Single Signed Baseball--The Only Known Example. The Heritage reputation for unearthing exceedingly rare single signed baseballs swells yet again with the presentation of this specimen from the Hall of Fame shortstop for the Pirates and Dodgers, whose drowning death at age forty in 1952 precipitated a modern dearth of autographs in any format. This, in fact, is the very first single signed baseball presented by a major auction house of which we are aware, as our database of the past twelve years comes up empty. Vaughan's black fountain pen ink traverses two panels and the sweet spot, reading "Arky Vaughan, Aug. 10, 1936, Pittsburgh 4, New York 3." The signature rates a technical 4/10 while the writing is a couple points stronger, and the leather of the ball (likely an ONL model but having shed its visible stamping) is toned and slightly weathered, but these condition concerns must be forgiven in respect of the intense scarcity. The wait for the next one could be another decade or more, possibly forever. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
