1935 First Major League Night Game Used Baseball Signed by Cincinnati Reds Team. Just the day before Babe Ruth rode off into the sunset with a three-home run performance that would mark the last of his storied career, the baseball world was forever changed as President Franklin D. Roosevelt flipped a switch in the White House and flood lights illuminated the diamond at Cincinnati's Crosley Field, bringing Major League Baseball into the night for the first time. It was a twenty-four hour period that saw the end of one great era and the beginning of another, as the sport traded its biggest star for a technological innovation that would allow the average working man to attend the games he would otherwise be unable to see. One could easily argue that nighttime baseball was the biggest thing to happen to baseball since the arrival of Ruth himself, and so Heritage is very pleased to offer what we believe to be the only known baseball to have seen action that groundbreaking evening.This ONL (Frick) ball shows fabulous use from the historic match between the Cincinnati Reds and the Philadelphia Phillies, and bears the signatures of twenty-two members of the host team. Among the honored: Lombardi, Dressen, Riggs, Kampouris, Schott, Hollingsworth, Goodman, Byrd, Frey, MacFayden and even George "Highpockets" Kelly, the former Reds great drawn like a moth to the bright bulbs that bathed his former stomping grounds in light. A pair of vintage inscriptions, penned in the same ink as the autographs, mark the occasion: "1st Night Game National League May 24, 1935" on the side panel, and a simple "May 24, 1935" on the sweet spot. We must note that the name beneath the vintage words "Presented to" was removed some time later and replaced with the new owner's, but other than this minor consideration the ball shows no alteration from its date of action.
Now that nighttime baseball is the rule rather than the exception, it's easy to forget just how significant this date in baseball history was. True baseball historians will understand however, and will take great interest in this once in a lifetime opportunity to add this important piece to their collections. LOA from PSA/DNA.
