1934 Tour of Japan Team Signed Baseball Used for First Pitch in Manila. There will always be enormous collector interest in autographed material from the most celebrated foreign tour in American baseball history, but the offered piece provides an intriguing, added spin. A vintage notation on the side panel of this ONL (Heydler) sphere states, "Pitched by Governor Murphy, First Ball Pitched Big Leagues vs. Manila, Dec. 9, 1934." The Philippines was still under the protection of the United States at this time, the result of a victory in the Spanish-American War, so it was surely a thrill for Murphy to see the greatest baseball stars of his homeland in his own adopted backyard. We suspect he was the owner of this sphere--the wear on the ball might suggest storage in a tropical climate, but the signatures still present with an average 5/10 boldness. All the top figures of the Tour are here: Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Mack, Averill, Gehringer, O'Doul, Miller, McNair and the spy Moe Berg. Seventeen autographs appear in total. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
