1932 New York Yankees Team Signed Baseball. World Championship season horsehide comes to us with a letter from our consignor, who was a seven year old boy when his grandparents took him to dinner at the Del Prado Hotel on Chicago's south side. Fellow diners that evening included the New York Yankees team, in town to face the White Sox, and the youngster's grandfather supplied the boy with a baseball and a pen and sent him over to their table. Up and down the two sides of the long table went the boy and the baseball, collecting eighteen autographs from the likes of Gehrig (8/10), Combs (8/10), Sewell (6/10), McCarthy (4/10), Gomez (2/10), Grimes (9/10) and Dickey (9/10). The boy was disappointed that the team's greatest star wasn't present, but he was soon approached by the team's bat boy (likely Ruth's hunchbacked good luck charm Eddie Bennett), who offered to escort the boy up to Ruth's hotel room, where the slugger was dining with his friend Earl Whitehead, a ChiSox pitcher, to complete the roster. "It was obviously one of the highlights of my young life," the letter of provenance expresses. The team had been well-trained to leave the sweet spot open for the Home Run King, and his 8/10 autograph now resides in that area. A vintage coating of shellac has done well to protect the Hall of Famers, though some of the lesser figures challenge the eyes. But as the last World Championship team to feature the great Babe Ruth, and as a proud souvenir retained by its original owner for eighty-two years, it's a tremendously desirable artifact with limitless charm and appeal. Letter of provenance from original owner. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.Auction Info
