    Description

1931 Philadelphia Athletics Team Signed Baseball. It can't have been easy to compete with the mighty New York Yankees in the 1930's, but the Philadelphia A's not only competed in 1931, they won the pennant. Behind the stellar play of pitchers and hitters alike, the team dominated the A.L. with 107 wins. Al Simmons would win a batting title at just shy of .400, to go along with twenty-two long balls and 128 RBI. Jimmie Foxx and Mickey Cochrane would likewise turn in powerful offensive performances.

Among the pitchers, Lefty Grove was the most dominating hurler in the major leagues, winning the A.L. Triple Crown with a 31-4 record, 2.06 ERA and 175 strikeouts. Other standouts included Rube Walberg with twenty wins, George Earnshaw with twenty-one victories, and Roy Mahaffey with a 15-4 record. The team would fall just short in the World Series, however, losing in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The ball offered in this lot is a shining example of a 1931 A's baseball. Signed on a toned OAL (Harridge) baseball, twenty-three autographs make up this orb. The sweet spot features pitching greats Grove and Earnshaw. To the right is an incredible lineup of Connie Mack, Waite Hoyt, Mickey Cochrane and Jimmie Foxx. Rube Walberg, Al Simmons and Coach Eddie Collins are also found here. Not one single big name is missing, and most are signed in 6-7/10 ink. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
