Description1931 Carl Mays Single Signed Baseball. With a record of 207-126 and an ERA of 2.92, Carl Mays put up statistics better than some pitchers in the Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, Mays will always be best remembered for one tragic pitch on August 16, 1920. Facing Cleveland Indian Ray Chapman, Mays' struck Chapman in the head, fracturing his skull. Chapman attempted to run to first but fell twice, at which point members of both teams rushed out to his aid. He died the following morning, the only fatality to occur on the field in baseball's long history.
Single signed baseballs from Mays are few and far between. This particular example was inscribed "To Robert Huntington By Carl W. Mays Nov. 30th, 1931." On a Spalding ONL (Heydler) ball with faint markings, the signature rates a 6/10, while the ball itself retains a fairly white, but dirty, finish. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
