The first "trio ball" we've encountered from these Yankee Hall of Famers

1931 Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig & Joe McCarthy Signed Baseball. The sudden and tragic passing of Miller Huggins late in the 1929 season found the mighty Yankee warship suddenly without a rudder at an inopportune time when Connie Mack's second great dynasty was beginning to take hold of the American League. So after a year adrift with former pitcher Bob Shawkey in charge, owner Jake Ruppert brought in recently dismissed Cubs skipper Joe McCarthy, beginning a fruitful sixteen seasons of service that would add seven World Championship rings and an eventual Hall of Fame plaque to the Yankee trophy case.

Here we find the newest pinstriped arrival with his two greatest weapons, their black fountain pen signatures applied to an Official American League baseball from the presidency of Ernest Barnard, assuring 1931 vintage. The Babe, just a season short of his famous "Called Shot" heroics, occupies his standard sweet spot position. To his right is stabled the mighty Iron Horse, with McCarthy rounding out the Hall of Fame trio above. Each is sealed beneath a vintage application of shellac, with Ruth benefiting at an 8/10 level and his compatriots just a point below.

While Ruth and Gehrig share residency on a considerable number of dual-signed balls, the addition of McCarthy here adds a rare and desirable spice to the mix. Managers were rarely approached for autographs in the pre-war era, but we can reasonably conclude that the 1931 vintage is the reason here, heralding the arrival of the man who would become the all-time leader in Yankees managerial victories with 1460, and retire with the highest winning percentage of any manager in Major League history (.615).
