1928 Ty Cobb & Tris Speaker Dual Signed Baseball. It's remarkable just how close this iconic pair came to joining the "Eight Men Out" of the 1919 Chicago White Sox in baseball infamy, edged to the brink of banishment by accusations of game-fixing from one of Cobb's own Tigers teammates. The day after Shoeless Joe and the gang clinched the 1919 American League pennant, making the results of all remaining regular season games a formality, Speaker's Cleveland Indians met Cobb's Detroit Tigers at Briggs Field. The Tigers would claim the victory that day, September 25, 1919, a result which Tigers pitcher Dutch Leonard would report seven years later had been orchestrated by the Hall of Fame outfielders, who had wagered large sums of money on the "sure thing" gamble.Rather ironically, the subsequent scandal would ultimately drive the celebrated pair together, as Speaker and Cobb abandoned the teams they had represented for ten and twenty-two years respectively, finding themselves sharing a dugout a year later with the 1928 Philadelphia Athletics. It was just after the close of that season that the inaugural class Hall of Famers appeared together in Toronto, Ontario, as a notation in an unknown hand indicates. We've been unable to uncover the purpose for this international travel, but perhaps it was as simple as a shared vacation for two aging ballplayers celebrating retirement after nearly a half century of combined diamond brilliance. In any regard, the resultant artifact presented here is the first and only dual signed sphere we've ever encountered from the fourth and fifth members of the 3,000 Hit Club.
And if there is another, it would be difficult to believe that this is not the superior example, supplying both a sweet spot Speaker and northern panel Cobb with 8.5/10 fountain pen brilliance. The "Reach Official League" ball, convincingly providing an OAL appearance with its red and blue stitching, likewise presents marvelously with only a hint of inconsequential spotting well clear of the signatures.
