1926 New York Yankees Team Signed Baseball, Second Finest Known! For years it reigned as the Heavyweight Champ, but this sphere was forced to reluctantly surrender its title as the discovery of Lou Gehrig's personal Mint condition sphere shook up the hobby world. That Gehrig example served as the first lot of the Heritage 2011 "Platinum Night" auction in August, where it set a new world record for team signed baseballs with a stunning $131,450 winning bid. There's certainly no shame in a silver medal however, and this representation from the American League Champs doesn't trail too far behind the Iron Horse's personal model. The OAL (Johnson) orb is a study in what an expertly applied coating of shellac can accomplish, trapping the twenty-nine black fountain pen signatures beneath it like flies in amber, suspended in time with barely a hint of the passage of decades. A quotation-marked "Babe" Ruth assumes his rightful sweet spot position, holding the signatures of legends like Gehrig, Pennock, Combs, Lazzeri, Hoyt and the super-tough Urban Shocker in its gravitational orbit. Other notable names include Meusel, Pipgras, Bengough, Gazella, Paschal, Collins and Ward. A small divot in the leather skirts the edge of Shawkey's signature but remains mercifully clear of the rest. We can assure the collecting community that the Gehrig example will not be seeing the light of the auction day for quite some time to come, so this is the one to chase if you count yourself among the most discerning of Yankees collectors.
