The greatest slugging tandem in baseball history

1926-27 Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Signed Baseball, PSA/DNA NM-MT 8. "They didn't get along," explained fellow pinstriped Hall of Famer Tony Lazzeri. "Lou thought Ruth was a big-mouth and Ruth thought Gehrig was cheap. They were both right." Though their personalities couldn't have been more different, the men whose digits were the first to be retired from Yankee service share the manner of immortality reserved for just the highest reaches of the athletic pantheon. Separately, their autographs remain among the most coveted and collectible in the hobby, but together that appeal swells exponentially, particularly when that shared medium is horsehide.

Provided is one of the finest representations thereof, a spectacular relic made even more thrilling by the medium itself, an Official National League (Heydler) baseball with a two-year stamping format that narrows the vintage to that reported in our lot title. We can rather safely assume that the appearance of these American League titans on Senior Circuit horsehide is the result of the Yankees' only excursions to a National League ballpark during that period, either to face the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1926 World Series, or the Pittsburgh Pirates during the four-game Fall Classic sweep of 1927.

Matching that delectable vintage is the remarkable state of preservation, the final data point establishing this as one of the most desirable signed baseballs in the hobby. The notoriously strict grading of leading autograph experts PSA/DNA calculate Ruth and Gehrig at 7/10 and 8/10 respectively, with the ball itself likewise a 7/10. Properly, a small "bump" is assigned for the elite aesthetics, finalizing the rating at PSA/DNA NM-MT 8. In May 2013, a nearly identical ball grading just a half-point higher commanded over $340,000 at auction, a figure that illustrates the enormous desirability of this high-grade duo.
