1920 Chicago White Sox Baseball with Six of The Eight Men Out. Perhaps second only to the story of the Babe's "Called Shot" in apocryphal baseball history is that of the meeting of Shoeless Joe Jackson and a young boy on the steps of Chicago's Cook County courthouse on September 29, 1920. Moments earlier, Jackson and pitcher Eddie Cicotte had admitted to a grand jury that the 1919 World Series had been fixed, the Cincinnati Reds' underdog victory purchased by crooked gamblers. "Say it ain't so," the boy implored, tugging on the star outfielder's coat sleeve. "I'm afraid it is," came Jackson's pained reply.Presented is one of the rarest and most desirable team spheres in the hobby, documenting the last days of Shoeless Joe and his co-conspirators' Major League tenure. Six of the notorious Eight Men Out are here, beginning with Jackson himself on the sweet spot of the OAL (Johnson) orb. Rounding out the doomed cast are Cicotte, Risberg, Williams, Weaver and McMullin. The dozen innocent that join: Eddie Collins, Faber, Schalk, Kerr, Gleason, Strunk, McClellan, Jourdan, John Collins, Wilkinson, and two indecipherable autographs.
The black fountain pen signatures, including Jackson's, exhibit signs of scattered period enhancements, but they are not fully traced and project at an average strength of 4/10 to 6/10. The precise vintage of the ball is determined by both a vintage "White Sox - 1920" notation in an unknown hand and the presence of Amos Strunk, whose first year of ChiSox service was the conspirators' last. An ancient coating of shellac provides the deep amber tone, and the white spots visible in our catalog imagery represent minor chipping from surface wear. It should go without saying that the listed condition concerns must be excused in light of the tremendous rarity and unparalleled historic importance of the ball, which stands as one of the most important and desirable in private hands.
