Description
1914 Buffalo Blues (Federal League) Team Signed Baseball. Extraordinarily rare sphere was gifted to our consignor in 1956 by an elderly friend of his father in Snyder, New York, a suburb of Buffalo, as detailed in his included letter of provenance. He admits that as a ten-year old boy he had little awareness of the significance of this baseball, but thankfully he resisted any urge to take it to the sandlot, allowing the ball to survive as one of just a handful of known team signed spheres from this short-lived rogue league. The ball itself, an Official Federal League model, is highly sought after by collectors today, but this is the first such example we've encountered that is autographed by a full team's roster.Twenty-two autographs can be discerned on the lightly tanned horsehide, most notably that of the great Hal Chase, who joins Shoeless Joe Jackson as a sure-fire Hall of Famer banished from the game for gambling. Other names include Al Schulz, Joe Agler, Billl Collins, Del Young, Arthur LaVigne, Tom Downey and more. Signatures are quite light, averaging 2/10 to 4/10, though Chase is among the boldest at 6/10. The darkest writing is a period notation stating "From Al Schulz, Oct. 7, 1914, Closing Day First Season," adding further appeal to a piece with no lack thereof. Certainly one of the rarest and most desirable team balls to surface in recent memory. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
