1986 Fleer Basketball Complete Signed Set of 131 Cards & 11 Stickers - Beckett Authentic.UPDATE: Text has been altered slightly since catalog went to print--this version supersedes all others.
It's widely and properly considered the greatest masterpiece of the "modern" trading card era, a daring first foray into the sport of basketball by the Fleer trading card company that has steadily gained such global notoriety that it has approached the pantheon status of such hobby giants as the 1909-11 T206 and 1952 Topps Baseball issues. Much like the latter, the elevated status has been fueled in large degree by one of its sport's most significant rookie cards, the fabled Michael Jordan #57. Heritage recently auctioned a "Black Label" SGC Pristine 10 example of that card for an astounding $420,000.
But that record-setting representation lacks a key attribute present here, a bold blue sharpie signature with a Beckett Mint 9 assessment to match that of the trading card itself. In fact, the entire assembly of 132 trading cards and eleven stickers are autographed by the athlete pictured, with 90% of the autographs matching or exceeding the soaring Beckett assessment assigned to His Airness. Viewers will quickly recognize that all autographs appear in blue, providing a pleasing consistency that any neophyte could appreciate. But only the advanced collector will recognize that the bulk of the autographs actually date to the decade of issue's production, each painstakingly and carefully acquired in person.
While the key Jordan card is the only specimen bearing Beckett assessments for both the autograph and the card itself, it's important to note that the specimens presented for signing were selected with an eye toward quality, and would find themselves perched near the top of the grading ladder along with MJ. We invite interested clientele to view our high-resolution imagery online for confirmation of this contention. A review will also remind us that Jordan was far from the only hardcourt icon captured in this classic set, with both the cards and the stickers awash in Hall of Famers like Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julius Erving, Akeem Olajuwon, Isiah Thomas, Dominique Wilkins, Karl Malone, Clyde Drexler and many more.
A particularly intriguing and unique pair of jewels in this crown appear in two versions of the #55 card, one autographed by Steve Johnson, whose stat line appears on verso, and the other by David Greenwood. Oddly, Steve Johnson is not actually pictured on this card, but rather Marques Johnson, who is in the background--this is an error card. This is the first example of this card we've seen autographed by the wrong Johnson (or by Greenwood), a fun variation on the theme. This second example brings the tally of cards to 132, taking the place of the missing checklist. It's a monumental achievement sure to draw the attention of the most discerning collectors of this modern classic.
The entire base set along with the stickers are encapsulated Beckett Authentic. Almost sixty percent of the signatures have been rated "10." Includes: Beckett Authentic - Autograph 10: 84 cards, #'s 1 Abdul-Jabbar, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12 Bol, 13, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 31 Erving, 33, 34, 36, 37, 39, 40, 41, 42, 44, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 55 (2), 56, 58, 59, 60, 63, 64, 66, 67, 69 M.
