1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky #18 Signed, PSA/DNA Authentic. In the February 2015 Platinum night auction, Heritage auctioned the 1979 WHA Player's Contract of Wayne Gretzky. That agreement sealed the "Great One" to a decade of service with the Edmonton Oilers - signed on his eighteenth birthday. It is possibly the most significant document in the vast archives of hockey. Only the paperwork that delivered Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees could be considered the baseball equivalent. The fact that the contract was executed on Gretzky's eighteenth birthday, the very first hours of his official adulthood, should illustrate just how intently the Edmonton Oilers wished to secure his services. It was not that long after that when our consignor - who was just 12-years old - with hands quivering, biting his lip in fear, gathered up the courage to ask his hero for an autograph. By doing so he secured his own piece of Gretzky history as this is certainly among the earliest autographs of "The Great One." Our consignor was a student at the Colin Campbell Hockey School in Tillsonburg, Ontario when he had this 1979 O-Pee-Chee card signed by Gretzky, who was already well on his way to being a household name in the hockey universe in July of 1980. Gretzky was just 19 years old himself. Signed in thin, felt-tip black marker, the signature rates a solid "7" while the card itself is very nicely centered with strong corner quality - Near-Mint+. Trying to get a fan to give up a treasured memento this is no easy task and this card has been in the possession of our consignor for the last 35 years. This is a card, signed during the earliest years of Gretzky's professional career and once it is auctioned, may not see the light of day for another 35 years. Encapsulated "Authentic" by PSA/DNA.
