1963 Stan Musial St. Louis Cardinals Player's Contract--His Final Season. History and the collectibles market have always had a soft spot for firsts and lasts, particularly when that which comes in the middle is particularly special. Presented is the closing book end to one of the most special careers in Major League Baseball, the very document that kept a forty-two year old legend in the Cardinals fold for his twenty-second and final campaign. He had signed one of the first $100,000 in National League history five years earlier, but this agreement halved that lofty sum to a figure that felt comfortable to both the team and Musial, who had famously requested a reduction in salary after a disappointing 1959 season.

Certainly The Man's stat line for his last season paled in comparison to those that that earned his baseball immortality, but that's really the point. Few players have exited the game as gracefully as Musial, and his signature on this rather humble contract is a sign of that fact. Most indicative of his importance to the club are addenda stapled to the third page that address bonuses to which Musial is entitled for past performances and language that secures his services as an ambassador for the team for years to come: "It is understood that effective with calendar year following the calendar year in which the Player retires as and active player, the Club agrees to pay the Player $17,333.33 annually for such public appearances as the Club may request..."

At the bottom of this page are the signatures of "Stanley F. Musial," National League president Warren Giles and the general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals Vaughan "Bing" Devine. Original storage folds but no other issues of note. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
