    Description

1960's Carl Mays Handwritten Letter Discussing Chapman Incident. The former New York Yankees pitcher pulls no punches in this venomous diatribe directed mainly at the memory of Hall of Fame manager Miller Huggins. "He was a low, selfish Rat," Mays writes, "he loved two things Huggins and money. He was not only rotten to me but Ruth as well, who made him." The lengthy handwritten letter to a journalist working on a book about the Yankees takes its most intriguing turn at the end, however, as Mays speaks to the circumstances of the day that his fastball killed opposing Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman (though he misspells his name). "This thing with Huggins and hitting Chatman I have had to live with because the papers said I was guilty and the general public believes everything they see in the paper. Chatman was hit because, when he shifted his back foot we all knew he was going to push the ball down the first base line, if he did no one could throw him out he was so fast, so we would bring the ball up to try to make him pop it up. So he ran into a high pitch over the plate." The seven-page letter is signed "Carl," and all ink remains as bold as the date of its application. Original mailing folds, but no other issues of note. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
