1960-62 Moe Berg Handwritten Notebooks Lot of 5. One of the most fascinating figures in twentieth century baseball, Berg was a Princeton-educated multi-linguist who earned a spot on the 1934 Tour of Japan roster not for his mediocre playing abilities, but rather as an undercover spy gathering intelligence for the United States government. These three small notebooks contain personal notes made by the catcher/spy in the later years of his life. A brief description of each: 1) Pocket telephone book, missing front cover, mainly pencil writing. Includes listings for Ted Lyons, Bill Donovan, Paul Rosbaud, Stanley Woodward and Tom Meany. Seventy-one pages, some pencil smudging but most pages clean. 2) Small (3x5") spiral notebook, ink writing, appears to be notes for a lecture. Mentions Hirohito, Stalin, Roosevelt, Korean War, Clifton Fadiman. Thirty-nine pages. 3) Small (4x6") spiral notebook, ink writing, appears to be either a diary or appointment book. Mentions baseball banquet, many baseball figures--Cronin, Frick, Giles, Rickey, Fox, Cobb, Whitey Ford, Berra. Forty-nine pages. 4) Small (3x5") spiral notebook, ink writing. Mentions Ernest Hemingway, Fidel Castro, Alexander, Gehrig, Wagner, Foxx, Cobb, Speaker, Ruth, picks to win MLB season. Seventy-six pages. 5) Small (4x6") spiral notebook, ink and pencil writing. Mentions Joe Cronin, a possible move of Kansas City Athletics to Dallas, TX. Thirty-nine pages. An intriguing little archive. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
