Description
1958 .400 Hitters Multi-Signed Baseball with Cobb, Hornsby, Williams, Sisler & Terry. In 1958, a banquet was held at the legendary Toots Shor's restaurant in New York to honor the 1946 AL. champion Boston Red Sox and 1947 World Series champion New York Yankees.
In attendance that night were five of the eight men who hit .400 during the twentieth century (Harry Heilmann and Joe Jackson had both passed away in 1951 and the ailing Nap Lajoie was not present at the event). Cobb and Hornsby each reached the .400 plateau thrice, Sisler twice, and Terry and Williams once each. Also in attendance at the banquet was a long-time Yankees coach named Jim Turner. A passionate student of both the game and its history, Turner had the revolutionary idea (and incredible foresight) to ask each of the five master batsmen in attendance to autograph the OAL (Harridge) sphere on offer here, which they did.
The blue ink autographs (which have since mellowed to a greenish hue) include Ty Cobb (8/10 on the sweet spot), George Sisler (9/10 on the north panel), Rogers Hornsby (7/10 on the south), Bill Terry (8/10 on the east), and Ted Williams (9/10 on the west). Just above Rajah's signature is a neatly penned inscription (most likely in Turner's hand) which serves as the perfect caption to the piece and reads simply ".400 Hitters 1958 Appearance."
The ball is lightly shellacked, has a small area of light soiling, and exhibits two very tiny and virtually undetectable pinholes (both through stitched panel junctions) which were used for mounting.
There's not a man alive today who ever recorded a two-for-five batting average in a Major League season, but the pioneering Jim Turner managed to lock in these five Hall of Famers long before the "theme ball" tradition was popularized. There are only four other known specimens of this particular assemblage and vintage, the last of which sold at Heritage in December of 2017 for $72,000. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
