    Description

1954 Joe DiMaggio & Marilyn Monroe Signed Broadway Playbill. Theater publication was issued "Week beginning Monday, September 13, 1954," the most tumultuous period of the disastrously brief marriage of Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe. It was September 15, 1954 that found the blonde bombshell atop a subway grate at the corner of Lexington and East 52nd Street awaiting a famous skirt-raising burst of air as she filmed "The Seven Year Itch." The iconic scene seems tame by today's standards, but Monroe emerged from her shared hotel room with DiMaggio the next day covered in bruises. Less than a month later, she filed for divorce on the grounds of mental cruelty. The most famous celebrity marriage in American history was history.

This is likely the very last autograph pairing of that doomed matrimony, discounting any legal paperwork signed for the dissolution. Each signature appears in bold 9+/10 blue ink on the cover of the program for the Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning play "The Teahouse of the August Moon." Toning at the spine is the result of removed cellophane tape, but the program is otherwise free of any visual distractions. This is arguably the most compelling DiMaggio/Monroe article to reach the auction block since Heritage set a World Record with a $191,200 result for a signed baseball in May 2006. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
