    Description

1953 Ty Cobb Handwritten Letter to Gil Hodges. Extraordinary letter from the Georgia Peach to Brooklyn Dodgers first baseman Hodges imparts some of the wisdom gained by the former through two decades in the Major League trenches, with an offer to assist even further should the young ballplayer so desire. Cobb had long turned a distrustful eye toward sportswriters, and begins the correspondence with the suggestion that Hodges ignore the negativity in the press. Though Hodges had finished in the top twenty for National League MVP voting, he shockingly went hitless in twenty-six plate appearances in the 1952 Fall Classic and was thus widely scapegoated for the Bums' loss in a tight seven-game Subway Series.

"I don't say you have, but if so don't let these 'birds' affect you in their mention of your lack of hitting in the last World Series. It just so happens they have to fill a column and subjects may be scarce so they write again and again about your lack of hits." He later encourages Hodges, writing, "I think you can make all of them eat their words this coming season and this is not psychology, you have the power, nothing wrong with eyes, then it has to be wrong fundamentals, stance, body balance and position, stance as to plate position, grip on bat...I think I could tell you about 3 or 4 simple things that might help you." Cobb closes with the admonition that nobody should be told about his generous offer, and signs "Sincerely, Ty Cobb."

After a short postscript, he signs again with his "T.R.C." initials. The letter is incorrectly dated "1/25/52," penned on three pages of Cobb's personal letterhead in 9+/10 green ink. Original mailing folds and light handling wear but no damage to note. With splendid content and Hodges heritage, this is one of the most desirable Cobb letters to surface in recent memory.
