1953 Mickey Mantle Period-Signed News Photograph. The Mick signed many thousands of photographs in his golden years, but those bearing his rookie-era signature are exceedingly rare, and this might be our favorite of that tiny population. The image finds the twenty-one year old slugger proudly pointing to the battered hide of an American League baseball he had recently bounced off a house beyond the outfield wall of Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C., a blast measured at a preposterous 565 feet. One savvy fan, quite possibly a member of the press who would have access to wire photographs like this one, approached Mantle soon after for an autograph, which appears here with 8/10 boldness. A light brushing of the still-wet ink is little distraction.

Image has been trimmed to 7x9" and exhibits a couple tack holes and some light, inconsequential creasing. Photo is encapsulated as Type III by PSA/DNA, indicating a second-generation image (standard for wire photography) printed within two years of the photo's genesis. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Type III. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph). Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
