The diamond and the silver screen collide

1952 New York Yankees Team Signed Baseball with Joe DiMaggio & Marilyn Monroe. This is the third example of this exceptionally rare relic that Heritage has had the good fortune to handle, a remarkable fact considering that only fifteen have ever existed. When we offered the first specimen in May 2007, we concluded that the odd presence of Joe and Marilyn on a ball that otherwise matched the 1952 Yankees roster must have been due to a visit by the famed couple back to DiMaggio's old stomping grounds during the first year of his retirement. The subsequent offering, complete with a red lipstick kiss from the blonde bombshell, brought clarity to the issue however, as we learned from the elderly consignor that her husband had earned the keepsake as a member of the winning 20th Century Fox studio softball team.

Each team in the recreational league had been represented by a studio star as its mascot, and it was Ms. Monroe's squad that claimed the Championship. We reprint in this listing an image from the victory party that accompanied the August 2011 offering, picturing the winning team posing with Monroe and their signed baseballs (please note that only a modern copy of that photo will be available to the winning bidder). It would stand to reason that Marilyn used her romantic relationship with the Yankee Clipper to organize the special gift for her Champions.

Like the two previous offerings, DiMaggio and Monroe share sweet spot duties, in black and blue ink respectively, each registering at about 7/10 in strength. Twenty-five members of the World Champion 1952 Yankees join them, most notably the twenty-one year old Mickey Mantle (7/10) in his rare and desirable rookie-era signature format. Other notables include Rizzuto, Berra, Mize, Stengel (CH), Martin, McDougald, Woodling, Raschi and Reynolds. Autographs range from 2/10 to 8/10, with most closer to the upper end of that spectrum. OAL (Harridge).

For a period of a few years, it was our offering of a baseball signed only by DiMaggio and Monroe that held the world record for autographed horsehide, commanding a staggering sum of $191,200 in May 2006. While we don't expect this relic to match the sale price of its nearly pristine predecessor, that record result speaks clearly of the enormous appeal and importance of this most glamorous celebrity coupling in the format. A half century after her passing, Marilyn Monroe's star only continues to brighten, suggesting an equally bright forecast for investment potential here. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
