1950 Charles "Kid" Nichols Single Signed Baseball. One of the fiercest bidding wars of our April 2011 Signature Auction was waged over our first ever offering of a stupendously rare Kid Nichols single, the only such specimen presented within a major sports auction in the 21st century. When the bidding finally stopped, the price tag had reached $53,775. We're very pleased now to present the second, an arguably superior example featuring a 7/10 black fountain pen application upon the sweet spot of an Official American Association sphere.

The ball is accompanied by a notarized letter of provenance from the consignor, who writes, in part, "In the summer of 1950 when I was 10 years old I went to Kansas City where I visited for 3-4 weeks staying with two different aunts and their husbands. Both of the aunts were my mother's sisters. One of the aunts, Henrietta was married to Harlan Everett whose grandfather happened to be Charles 'Kid' Nichols who had been recently inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In late June or early July 1950 I was invited to go to a baseball game at the Kansas City Blues ballpark with the Everetts and Kid Nichols. During the game Kid Nichols was recognized by the crowd and given a home run ball that had been hit by one of the teams earlier in the game. He autographed the ball and gave it to me."

The ball certainly exhibits game use, and some post-signing handling, and time has faded the ball's stamping beyond visibility. But the autograph remains quite strong, and, as just the second Nichols single to surface within the hobby in over a decade, this ball remains one of the most attractive autograph lots within this Signature auction. We were frankly stunned that another surfaced so soon after the first, but we don't expect lightning to strike a third time. Notarized letter of provenance from consignor. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
