    Description

1949 Jackie Robinson Signed Zionist Invitation. Just a couple years after becoming the first African-American player in Major League Baseball, Jackie Robinson signed the back of this 1949 invitation to "The Committee of the Friendship Food Train For Israel." The similarities between Robinson fighting for the right to play professional baseball and Jews fighting for the right to re-inhabit their homeland make this a very interesting piece. Israel had declared itself a nation in May of 1948, but it would not be until May of 1949 that it was recognized by the U.S., United Nations and others. Thus, this invitation, dated February of 1949, came at a time the Jewish state was still fighting for re-establishment as a country. The autograph was obtained by Jacques Torczyner, a leading Zionist who was instrumental in helping Israel gain it's status as a nation. Robinson's signature is on the blank back of the 5x6" note, and has been deemed Gem Mint by PSA/DNA. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Gem Mint 10. A notarized letter of provenance by our consignor is included.
