    Description

1947 Martin Dihigo Handwritten Signed Receipt. For collectors of 20th century Hall of Famers, there are few targets more elusive than this Negro League legend whose twenty-five seasons of professional ball made him a star in three nations (United States, Mexico, and his Cuban homeland). Here we find one of the more attractive examples of his scarce signature, penned in his role as an official in an association of Cuban ballplayers. The receipt, translated:

"August 15, 1947. I received from Mrs. Burton M. de Sebas Aloma the amount of four hundred ($400.00) pesos for the account of the association of baseball players, [signed] Martin Dihigo."

We believe that the receipt was issued to the wife of Cuban ballplayer Luis Aloma, who enjoyed a brief tenure with the Chicago White Sox in the early 1950's. The page exhibits some scattered toning, small insect holes clear of the writing, and a vertical center fold line, but all ink remains as bold as the date of application. Paper collectibles from the island of Cuba are notoriously poor due to the tropical climate and lack of air conditioning, so this document has weathered the decades particularly well. Considering the rarity and enormous appeal of the piece, condition concerns must take a back seat regardless. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
