The Babe's penultimate appearance at his House
1947 Babe Ruth Day Collection with Two Ruth Autographs. Even the immortals are mortal, and the hoarse croak of Ruth's voice as he addressed an adoring Yankee Stadium on April 27, 1947 left no doubt in the mind of any member of the sold out crowd that the end was rapidly approaching. It was a momentous age in our National Pastime--twelve days earlier Jackie Robinson had rescued the soul of the game much like the Babe had done in the aftermath of the 1919 World Series scandal, and as a new legend debuted, the greatest of them all was in the Bronx to say goodbye.Presented is a fascinating and heart-wrenching archive of exceedingly rare artifacts from this celebration of the Babe early in the 1947 New York Yankees World Championship season, comprised of the following components:
1) Babe Ruth signed typed letter. Ruth graciously acknowledges the work of a sportswriter with the message: "Dear Mr. Jones: Thank you and the Sports Magazine for the tribute paid me on the occasion of 'Babe Ruth Day' April 27, 1947. The nice poem touched me greatly and the picture was fine. Incidentally I have always thought this picture was the best example of the perfect baseball follow-through swing, and I was happy to see that you used it. Again thanking you believe me to be, Sincerely, [signed] Babe Ruth." Signature rendered in 9+/10 black fountain pen ink. Original mailing folds but no other condition caveats. Matted and framed to 19x23".
2) Babe Ruth signed postcard picturing Yankee Stadium. Black fountain pen ink signature rates 8.5/10. Text on verso is handwritten and signed by Ruth's legendary agent Christy Walsh. He writes, "Your enthusiastic acceptance received and deeply appreciated. Be patient while it's cooking. Babe signed these cards at the Stadium for a few of my friends. It's a souvenir of his big day at the old ballyard--I'm afraid his last appearance there."
3) Exceedingly rare ticket stub for the April 27, 1947 event. Typed text on stub identifies it as Yankee owner Larry MacPhail's box, and as "Babe Ruth Day." Encapsulated by PSA as "Authentic."
4) Type I original of Nat Fein's photo of Ruth in the Yankees dugout. Fine condition, signed and dated by the famed lensman in bottom margin. Photo is 11x14", matted and framed to 23x26". Fein is, of course, famous for his Pulitzer Prize-winning image "The Babe Bows Out" shot at Ruth's final Yankee Stadium appearance the following year. PSA/DNA letter attesting to "Type I" status is included.
5) Life magazine for May 12, 1947, with coverage of Babe Ruth Day. VG. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (both Ruth autographs). Full LOA from James Spence Authentication (both Ruth autographs).
