    Description

1946 Stan Musial Signed Uniform Player's Contract--MVP & World Championship Season! Baseball was still going strong back in the States but the future, not just of the game but of the entire free world, was very much in doubt when this uniform player's contract for the services of Stan "The Man" Musial was executed at the close of the 1943 season. We see evidence of this uncertainty in the typed addendum to the standard language on page two that reads, "12. It is agreed that Contract covers the services of the Player for the year 1946, or if Baseball suspends, covers the third year that Baseball is played after the 1943 season." At the bottom of that page we find the rare and enormously desirable "Stanley Musial" player signature, and that of Cardinals president Sam Breadon. Cover has the signed approval of National League president Ford Frick.

Musial would return from 1945 military service to record one of the finest seasons in Major League history, winning the MVP Award in a landslide with National League-topping numbers in batting average (.365), hits (228), doubles (50), triples (20) and slugging percentage (.587). The year would conclude with one of the most dramatic Fall Classics in history, best remembered for Enos Slaughter's famous "Mad Dash" to score the Game Seven-winning run.

The contract was rescued by uncle of our consignor who was employed by the Cardinals in 1966 to assist with the move from Sportsman's Park to Busch Stadium. The workers were instructed to clear out the file cabinets and burn the contents. Wisely, the gentleman saved this contract from the fire. Some years later, the blank back of the contract was used to write traveling directions, but this writing is not visible upon display. Some toning and light staining is equally innocuous. A splendid memento from the apex of Stan the Man's career. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
