    Description

1946 Roy Campanella Double-Signed Nashua Dodgers Uniform Player's Contract. It is typically Campy's teammate and fellow Hall of Fame immortal Jackie Robinson who garners all the credit for the sport's racial integration, but the contract offered here represents another key step in curing baseball's most egregious sin. With Robinson representing Triple-A Brooklyn Dodgers farm club the Montreal Royals in 1946, Campanella (along with fellow Ebbets-bound superstar Don Newcombe) became the first black ballplayer representing a Major League affiliate within the borders of the United States. Furthermore, after future Brooklyn manager Walter Alston was tossed by an umpire during the 1946 Nashua season, Campy assumed managerial duties for the conclusion of the contest, becoming the first African-American to manage white players in a professional game. He would call Don Newcombe to the plate as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning, the result a game-tying two-run homer in the eventual comeback victory.

The Class B farm club contract designates a salary of $185/month with a $2,400 signing bonus stipulated on the second page of the four-page standard document. Campanella signs in 10/10 black ink on the second and third page of the contract, the former including his handwritten address and the latter the "April 1, 1946" date of signing. Club president and future Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Buzzie Bavasi signs twice as management, along with a single signature from Campy's agent.

The contract exhibits original storage folds but no other concerns of note. An enormously important document marking the start of not only a Hall of Fame career but also the dawn of a new age in our National Pastime. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
