    Description

1944 Mel Ott Single Signed Baseball. He was the second member of the 500 Home Run Club to pass away, though Ruth's unparalleled generosity as a signer rendered his autograph as far more common than this early member of the group. Ott and Foxx are unquestionably the toughest hurdles for those building a complete run of singles, and for those who require a quality exemplar to fill the space, the hunt gets tougher still. But one winning bidder will put those worries behind him on May 3rd, when this top-tier specimen finds a new owner. Master Melvin was knocking on the door of the 500 Home Run Clubhouse when he inscribed the side panel of this pristine white ONL (Frick) ball for an admirer, writing, "To My Friend 'Buzz' Davis, Best Wishes, Mel Ott." His blue fountain pen ink rates a very conservative 8/10. An unknown hand dates the inscription to "2/24/44" below. Surely the remarkable state of preservation is due to its decades of solitude in the original Spalding box, which is included in the lot. Ball is consigned by the family of the original recipient and makes its hobby debut in this auction. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
