    Description

1944 Grover Cleveland Alexander Handwritten Signed Letter re: Famous Lazzeri Strike Out. Having completed a nine-inning ten to two victory in Game Six, Alexander could have been forgiven for celebrating that night, and reports have him either still drunk and/or asleep as Game Seven moved into the late innings. But when fellow future Hall of Famer Jesse Haines developed a blister on his pitching hand, Alexander was roused to enter the game in relief to protect a three to two Cardinals lead, facing the dangerous Tony Lazzeri with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and the bases full. He addresses the most famous "K" in Fall Classic history in his response to a fan, "Will try to answer your letter and some of your questions. I used a Curve Ball to strike Lazzeri out..." He goes on to write, "As for my best year that is hard to pick and in 1915 I won 31 games. In 1916 33 wins and in 1917 30 was all so you see they were all 3 pretty good years..." Alexander's pencil averages 7/10 on a single page of letterhead from a Cincinnati hotel. Signed "G.C. Alexander" at the close. Original mailing folds, very light staining, neither a distraction. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
