1944 Babe Ruth & Others Multi Signed New York Baseball Writers Program. It is always a pleasure to have solid provenance of a vintage baseball artifact, and be able to see where it came from and who owned it. This offered lot includes a full letter from the original owner, giving a touching back story that only adds to the allure. In 1944, Fred Kacher attended a New York Baseball Writers Eating and Oratorical Contest. While there, he meets Connie Mack, whom he describes as "one of the grandest persons in baseball," and Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who would pass away later this year. Other players he mentions meeting were Babe Ruth, Carl Hubbell, Joe Cronin, Luke Sewell and others. He would get signatures from eight players altogether on the official program. In the letter he gifts the signed program to his friend Bill Jones, a Staff Sergeant in the war, and asks him to save the date in 1945 when (hopefully) the war would be over and Jones would return home. We may never know if Bill Jones returned home safely from the war, or if he did so in time to attend the 1945 ceremony with Kacher, but what a touching wartime tribute for Kacher to obtain such a prized item for his military friend.

The program, jokingly referred to as a "Score Card" on the cover, offers a schedule as well as a seating chart. Kacher sat at table 86, joined by Jim Boyer and Ed Rommell, Major League Baseball umpires. It was most likely held together by a string at some point, but is currently unbound but complete. Signatures on the front include Babe Ruth (9/10 pencil), Kenesaw Mountain Landis (8/10), Joe Cronin, Johnny Pesky, Eddie Rommel, Will Harridge and Jim Boyer (all 8/10). The Connie Mack signature has been deemed a non-malicious secretarial by PSA/DNA, suggesting Mr. Kacher must have sent the program off to Mack to be signed after the event. Program measures about 6.5x10" and letter, unfolded, measures 7.5x10.5." Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
