1942 Samuel Goldwyn Signed Letter re: "The Pride of the Yankees." Samuel Goldwyn's two-page letter to a journalist is pure poetry, commemorating the life of one of baseball's noblest heroes with the same loving artistry that characterized the movie he was about to film. The text, in part: "There has never in the history of sport been as moving a chapter as the events leading up to the July fourth in 1939 when Lou Gehrig, faltering in step and speech, stood up to a microphone in the Yankee Stadium and, with tears streaming down his face, said to the 60,000 people who had come to cheer him for the last time, 'I feel today that I am the luckiest man on the face of the earth.'" This extraordinary letter is one of the most attractive and important pieces we've encountered relating to this blockbuster Hollywood feature, matched by the glorious condition of the personal letterhead and 9+/10 closing signature from Goldwyn. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
