1942 All-Star Game Program Signed by Mel Ott & Others. It's the rarest of all publications from the Midsummer Classic, the first contested during the United States' participation in the Second World War. This combat status is the reason for the scarcity--just 33,694 were in attendance at the Polo Grounds event, a reduction of over 20,000 from the previous edition in Detroit. Reduced wartime attendance was only half of the equation, however, as the majority of programs from this game are thought to have been lost to paper drives in support of the war effort. Today examples surface on the hobby's auction block at a pace of about one every two years. This is the finest we've encountered, free of typical tearing or other damage, with just general toning and a vertical center fold line to report. The appeal is enhanced as we turn to the center scorecard, where six bold black fountain pen signatures appear, most notably Hall of Fame outfielder and hometown hero Mel Ott, fellow National Leaguers Walker and Mort Cooper, and famed entertainer Bill "Mr. Bojangles" Robinson. All autographs are 9+/10. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
