    Description

1940 Ray Brown Signed Puerto Rican League Contract. Hobby history was made when Heritage Auction Galleries realized a price of $95,600 for Josh Gibson's 1941 Santurce contract, and here we follow up with another Hall of Famer's contract from the same Puerto Rican League ballclub. While Brown is admittedly not as widely recognized as his legendary Homestead Grays battery mate, he is certainly just as scarce, with only a handful of autographs in any format surfacing in the collecting hobby. Here we present what is arguably the most appealing artifact from that tiny supply.

The standard four-page contract paying the superstar pitcher twenty-five dollars a week for the 1940-41 season is signed at the close "Raymond L. Brown," with the star pitcher adding his Homestead, Pennsylvania address below in the same 10/10 black fountain pen ink. The contract exhibits some mild toning, with original storage folds and filing punch holes at top, but nothing which could properly be characterized as damage. Ever since the Baseball Hall of Fame properly took action in 2006 to more effectively recognize the stars of the Negro Leagues, collectors have been scrambling to locate these tough new inductees. Scramble no more, and bid to win. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
