    Description

1940 Bill Klem Handwritten Double Signed Letter. The Hall of Fame umpire's distinctive black fountain pen script sings the praises of former Gashouse Gangster John "Pepper" Martin upon his appointment as manager of the Sacramento Solons of the Pacific Coast League. Fantastic baseball content is found throughout the lengthy correspondence penned on both sides of Klem's personal letterhead, concluding with the great compliment, "Martin was the greatest hustler in the game since Ty cobb's day and allways (sic) a spark plug yet he was too smart to become embroiled with the Umpires." The letter is signed "W.J. Klem" at the close, and again as "Bill" at the completion of the postscript. Tough in any format, Klem's autographs within the context of a baseball-heavy ALS are particularly appealing. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
