    Description

1940 Academy of Sport Display Signed by Babe Ruth, Football Hall of Famers. Babe Ruth remains one of the most beloved figures in American sports history not just for his unearthly skill with a Louisville Slugger, but for his unfaltering kindness to children and his determination to bring the sport of baseball to every last one of them. This had been the aim of "The Academy of Sport" at the 1939 New York City World's Fair, organized by Christy Walsh and featuring many of the greatest names in athletics as teachers to young fair attendees. This large (11x14") card stock page was passed around at the closing ceremonies for the Academy and autographed by a marvelous assortment of sports legends, their wives and assorted newspaper men.

Joining Ruth and Walsh are New York Giants and Hall of Famers Steve Owen and Mel Hein, Notre Dame Four Horsemen member Jim Crowley, famed The Sporting News cartoonist Willard Mullin, the wives of Ruth, Gehrig and John McGraw and more. Not a single one of the twenty-nine autographs has faded one iota since its application, and Ruth's autograph is quite literally the finest, boldest specimen conceivable. Punch holes along left edge suggest this was once enclosed in a large booklet, and represent the only condition issue worthy of note. Included is a charming 11x14" image of Ruth holding court with a group of thrilled young boys as he signs Academy of Sport certificates. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
