    Description

1939 Lou Gehrig Signed Scorecard, Day After Retirement Announced. Note the handwritten date of June 22, 1939 at the center scorecard of the provided twelve-page program for a Chicago White Sox visit to Yankee Stadium. It was on this day that newspapers across the country carried the heartbreaking news that the Yankees had yesterday announced Lou Gehrig's retirement and proclaimed July 4th to be "Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day." One can only imagine the emotion the Iron Horse must have felt this day in the Yankee dugout, having just learned the nature of his terrible illness and the inevitability of his fate. His bold black fountain pen ink appears upside down on the Chicago half of the center score page, with teammates and fellow future Hall of Famers Earle Combs and Joe DiMaggio in pencil above. Two minor autographs appear in pencil on the cover. The scorecard is toned with age but complete and essentially undamaged, presenting very nicely. A wonderful and melancholy relic from the beginning of the end for one of the game's great heroes. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
