The Babe's immortality is made official

1939 Babe Ruth Signed Baseball Hall of Fame Grand Opening First Day Cover, PSA/DNA Mint 9. The identity of a sleepy little town in upstate New York was transformed forever on June 12, 1939, the day the ribbon was cut at the newly founded Baseball Hall of Fame on the shores of Lake Otsego. Though Cooperstown had enjoyed some limited fame with its controversial proclamation as baseball's birthplace, never had the eyes of the nation been so keenly focused upon the leafy hamlet until the day that the greatest living ballplayers convened to receive the game's highest honor. This rare first day cover, affixed with a newly released three-cent stamp commemorating baseball's centennial, bears the postmark of that historic date and the autograph of the most famous honoree of them all.

While Ruth signed cachets from this event do, or rare occasion, appear upon the hobby's auction block, we're comfortable in the characterization of "finest known" for this offering. The experts at PSA/DNA assess the condition of the Babe's huge (three inches long!) and bold blue fountain pen creation at Mint 9, but a perfect Gem Mint 10 rating would have come as no surprise. Unquestionably one of the finest Babe Ruth signature exemplars in any format. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Mint 9.
