    Description

1937 Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown Signed Certificate. The loss of two fingers at age seven to a corn shredder at his uncle's Indiana farm proved to be a tragic blessing for this Dead Ball-era Hall of Fame pitcher, who explained later in life, "That old paw served me pretty well in its time. It gave me a firmer grip on the ball, so I could spin it over the hump. It gave me a greater dip." Mordecai's microscopic 2.06 lifetime E.R.A. would make him a guaranteed first-ballot Hall of Famer today, but Cooperstown didn't come calling for him until 1949, a year after his death. This posthumous induction, partnered with a career that ended in 1916, has ensured a very thin supply of autographs from Brown, making this offered example a rare treat for Hall of Fame collectors. "Three Finger" signs this Certificate of Merit for "Excellence in Umpiring" as a member of the National Semi-Pro Baseball Congress, representing his hometown of Terre Haute, Indiana. The black fountain pen signature is a flawless 10/10 and presents brilliantly despite the imperfect condition of the certificate itself, which shows significant yet visually unobtrusive creasing and paper loss on the right border. One of only a tiny handful of Mordecai Brown signatures to be offered in recent years, and arguably the finest. LOA from PSA/DNA.
