One of the rarest Hall of Fame autographs in the hobby!

1937 Jimmy Collins Handwritten Signed Letter. He entered Cooperstown posthumously, two years after his passing at age seventy-three in 1943, widely considered to be the greatest fielding third baseman of the Dead Ball Era. He remains second only to Brooks Robinson in career putouts at the position, and was quite handy with the lumber as well, batting .294 with sixty-five home runs, a remarkable tally for the turn-of-the-century game. But Collins is best remembered today as the player/manager of the 1903 Boston Americans, winners of the very first edition of the World Series.

It was at the end of his playing career that Collins labored two years as a member of the Philadelphia Athletics, and it was this time in the City of Brotherly Love that inspired this letter to leading Philadelphia broadcaster Stoney McLinn about his former manager. The text, in full:

    "Dec 18th, 1937

    Mr. Stoney McLinn
    Phila Pa.

Dear Friend:- Yours of Dec. 10th at hand concerning birthday party for Connie Mack. Excellent idea and wish I could attend but am unable to. Wish you would convey to him my greetings on his birthday and 'hope the good Lord will preserve him for many years more.' Baseball can ill afford to lose men like 'Connie.' Wish you all the good benefits of this Xmas season and hope to get around your neighborhood shortly.

I am, Sincerely Yours, Jimmy Collins."

The letter is handwritten in bold (9/10 average) black fountain pen ink on a lined page measuring 5x7.5". A few light areas of toning cause little distraction and do not affect legibility in the slightest.

This is just the second Collins autograph that Heritage has had the great fortune to handle, and the first ALS (to the best of our knowledge) that has ever appeared at auction. As such, declaring this offering to be a "once in a lifetime opportunity" may not be hyperbole. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
