1936 Lou Gehrig Signed Check for World Series Tickets. For the many collectors who dream of owning an intensely scarce Gehrig check but can't justify the five-figure price tag, the flood that robbed this example of its boldness could be considered an act of a benevolent spirit. The particular nature of this specific check surely makes one wonder just what it might have realized in ideal condition, as it was made payable to "American League B.B. Club," for "$293.70" on "Sept. 28/36." Flip it over, and one finds out why Lou was paying the Yanks--the endorsing stamping bolding announces, "Pay to the order of Manufacturers Trust Company, The American League Baseball Club of New York, Inc., World Series Account." That's right, the season's Most Valuable Player was buying tickets for the famous Subway Series which would result in the Bronx Bombers' fifth World Championship. All writing is in the Hall of Fame first baseman's hand, including his ultra-desirable "Henry Louis Gehrig" signature at lower right. Though the writing is light, perhaps 3/10, it remains 100% legible, so all is not lost. A single vertical center fold and a chip at lower left corner must also be noted. As far as we're concerned, this is definitely a glass half (or even three-quarters) full. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
