1933 Rogers Hornsby Signed Letter with Fantastic Baseball Content. "He was frank to the point of being cruel and as subtle as a belch," once wrote sports journalist Lee Allen of the man who transitioned from being one of the most feared hitters in baseball to one of its most feared managers. But despite Hornsby's famed surliness, he was unfailingly accommodating to his young fans, as this magnificent letter attests. In full: "Dear Arthur: I am always glad to get letters from boys who like to play baseball and have read yours with interest. Your fault as outlined is the failing of many ball players--cannot hit--but if you will keep on trying, I believe you will develop into a hitter. To be a good hitter you have to learn to hit good balls, and to get distance on your swing so that when you come in contact with the ball you can follow it through. Be sure to practice a lot and perhaps the above will help you. Living in Brooklyn it is just possible you may be able to get over to the Yankee Stadium when our club is playing there on Sept. 6, 7,8 and 9th: if you do be sure to come round to see me and perhaps I can give you a few more pointers that will help. Wishing you a lot of success, I am, Very truly yours, [signed] Rogers Hornsby." Letter is typed on St. Louis Browns letterhead and signed at close in 10/10 black fountain pen ink. Original mailing folds and light wear at edges. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
