1933 Lou Gehrig Signed "2nd Home Run" Large Photograph. In the modern sports collectibles hobby, it's almost exclusively action photography that is hawked at autograph shows, but the tradition hadn't quite gotten legs prior to the Second World War, with posed portraits the far more common medium. So while any signed image from the brave and tragic Iron Horse is cause for celebration, the presented specimen is truly a breed apart. The precise details of the event have been lost to history, but some intriguing clues are here. After inscribing the image, "To Sammy With Kindest Regards, Lou Gehrig," the Hall of Fame first baseman adds a short notation at the photo's lower edge: "2nd Home Run." Further to the right, an imprinted seal of "The News" intersects a notation in an unknown hand reading, "Photo by [illegible] 1933." Another "The News" imprint appears at lower left corner. The photo exhibits a degree of handling wear, with a network of creases that occasionally break through the photographic emulsion, but our catalog imagery should properly indicate that the piece presents wonderfully despite such flaws. Dimensions 8x11". Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
