    Description

1930's Babe Ruth Signed Banjo Head. Yes, you read that correctly. It's definitely a one-of-a-kind piece, and a rather charming story that was actually the topic of a work by noted cartoonist Bill Gallo (a photocopy of which is provided). Gallo reprints the letter sent to him by our consignor:

    Dear Mr. Gallo,

Your cartoon brought back a memory of how I got Babe Ruth's autograph. It was in the mid-30's and I had a 'Hill-Billy' band in a tavern in Phoenicia, N.Y.--One Sat. night the Babe and a considerable entourage came in, the party being based locally for a few days while fishing the Esopus (for trout). They settled in for some serious eating and believe me, the legend is true--the Babe dearly loved to eat (and drink). After a time we of the band got up the courage to ask for autographs--Babe graciously complied. Having no baseball handy, he signed my banjo, which I still have. I never forgot his kindness for we were a bunch of nobodies yet he treated us like nobility.

Gallo's drawing got the location of the signature wrong, as you can see in our lot imagery, but the black ink signature has survived in marvelous 9+/10 condition on the admittedly battered and toned but still wonderful and utterly unique artifact. Likewise included is a snapshot of our consignor posing proudly with the treasure he received seven decades earlier. JSA Auction LOA.
