The Iron Horse is tasked with settling a Fall Classic wager.

1930 Lou Gehrig Handwritten Letter with World Series Content, PSA/DNA Mint 9. A little known fact about the Yankees' Hall of Fame first baseman--he stole home fifteen times during his Big League career! Check the record books and you'll find that one of those daring thefts came on June 7, 1930, a double steal with fellow Cooperstown honoree Bill Dickey served up as the bait. Later that evening, from his room at The Hotel Chase in downtown St. Louis, Gehrig graciously responded to a fan who had contacted him to settle a bet. On hotel letterhead, the handwritten text, in full:

    Friend Hayes:

Sorry, but none of our series games ever went 10 innings, and I don't believe I ever broke one up with a double. Hope you didn't lose too much.

    Lou Gehrig--

    Pardon delay.

The letter is undated, but the included mailing envelope (written but unsigned by Gehrig) is included, postmarked "Saint Louis, Mo., Jun 7, 1930, 10:00 PM." Gehrig's black fountain pen ink survives with 9/10 boldness on both the letter and the envelope, and while each shows a degree of handling and inconsequential staining, the pieces remain solid and eminently displayable.
