Description
1929 Inaugural Academy Awards Multi-Signed Baseball. Both a singular rarity and a compelling mystery, this baseball derives from the personal collection of Hall of Fame outfielder Al Simmons, consigned to auction by his family directly and inscribed "To Al," by silent film star Charles Farrell. However, the May 16, 1929 date of the first Academy Awards found the World Championship Athletics on the rails between Detroit and Washington, leaving no opportunity for Simmons to attend the Hollywood banquet personally. We must then assume it was Simmons' proxy who collected the fifteen signatures which appear upon this ONL (Barnard) sphere, creating a thoroughly unique piece that stands not only as what is certainly the sole baseball from that historic event in entertainment history, but likewise one of the very few pre-war multi-signed baseballs autographed entirely by celebrities with no attachment to the game.
The autographs include such iconic names as Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Buster Keaton, Janet Gaynor, Edward Sedgwick, and Virginia Valli. The ball exhibits toning and a coat of shellac was applied at the time to preserve to signatures which average 5/10. Auction LOA from SGC Authentic. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
