Description1927 New York Yankees Team Signed Baseball, PSA/DNA VG-EX+ 4.5.
With the clarity of hindsight, the lopsided dominance of this most fabled edition of New York Yankees rosters seems as if it should have been apparent from the very start, but public sentiment (or at least that of leading oddsmakers and sportswriters) leaned south to Philadelphia on Opening Day of 1927. To be fair, Connie Mack's newest creation looked unbeatable on paper, the signing of three veteran legends-Ty Cobb, Eddie Collins and Zack Wheat-bolstering a roster already heavy with future Cooperstown talent. But the Yanks would set a blistering pace from the starting gun, winning their first six games to lead the American League from wire to wire, finishing a stunning nineteen games ahead of the second-place Philadelphia Athletics at the close of the regular season.
The 1927 edition of the Yankees fielded seven Hall of Famers and this OAL (Johnson) sphere, is graced by five of those seven immortalized in Cooperstown bronze, including the legendary slugging tandem of Babe Ruth (sweet spot) and Lou Gehrig (side panel above the Ban Johnson stamp), Yankee skipper Miller Huggins who perished just two years later, second sacker Tony "Push 'Em Up" Lazzeri, and ace pitcher Herb Pennock. The remaining two signers were no slouches either; starting left fielder Bob Meusel who hit .337, and the dependable Benny Bengough, who would have been Huggins' starting catcher if he hadn't sustained a sore arm.
While the ball exhibits age induced toning and scuffing, the league stamps and the affixed black fountain pen autographs are all still bold and clearly discernable. The experts at PSA/DNA have assigned an autographs grade of "6," a baseball grade of "3," and an overall grade of "4.5." Full grading LOA from PSA/DNA, VG-EX+ 4.5.
