1927 Mrs. Babe (Helen) Ruth Signed Checks (3) & Unsigned Photographs (3). She was a seventeen year-old waitress at Boston's Landers' Coffee Shop when the Babe married her on October 17, 1914, just two weeks after making the final start of his rookie season with the Red Sox. Ruth had known her for less than three months. Various reports have the couple separating as early as 1920 and as late as 1926, but they were certainly estranged at the time that Christy Walsh issued these three checks totaling $4,000 to her from the Babe's pay over a two month span during the glorious 1927 Championship and sixty home run season. These are the only examples we've ever encountered of the autograph of the first Mrs. Ruth, who would die less than two years later in a house fire. The lot also provides a rare look at the young beauty, with three vintage Type 1 images picturing the happy couple, the third including Lou Gehrig as well. Each of the checks is signed by both Walsh and Helen Ruth in 9/10 or better fountain pen ink. The checks exhibit storage folds but otherwise present perfectly. The photos are each 8x10" in size with minor and rather inconsequential wear causing little distraction. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
