    Description

1927 Lou Gehrig Signed Barnstorming Photograph. It's an image we've all seen hundreds of times, but almost without fail as a double-signed modern reprint. So it's always a welcome surprise to see the genuine article, the original 8x10" that was issued to fans during the famous Bustin' Babes vs. Larrupin' Lou's barnstorming tour that brought the Yankee pantheon to the vast expanses of America too distant from a Major League stadium to see these legends any other way. As a period pencil notation on the reverse indicates, this photo was autographed by the Iron Horse at Oakland, California's Emeryville Park on October 23, 1927. A second notation at lower right of obverse drives the point home. The signature of the American League MVP is simply spectacular, a bona fide 9+/10 in blue fountain pen ink. Ruth's absence keeps this otherwise pristine example from venturing deep into the five-figures. The photo itself is flawless in appearance, effectively unchanged from the immediate aftermath of the greatest season in New York Yankees history. Professionally matted and framed to dimensions of approximately 16x18". Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
